The Prep Football Ice Pack Badge

Every prep sport athlete knows RICE. It’s short for Rest Ice Compression and Elevate and if you’ve ever rolled your ankle (probably about a dozen times..each ankle) or hyperextended the knee, you know what Ice Pack means. I’ve had ice packs on knees, ankles, shoulders, fingers, and most recently…directly to the left eye after a major poke in the eye tore my cornea. Probably best to hide that last sentence from moms. Ice Packs are just part of the landscape in high school sports so we though it deserved it’s own badge.

What exactly is a badge. Well, you don’t wear it. It’s an animated digital reflection of what’s important to you. Little quick movies that tell visitors to your Player Profile page what makes you tick. We’re adding new ones all the time because…let’s face it…prep sport players in the U.S. are freaks and you’re in to all kinds of nonsense. So that’s a badge. Let take a closer look at the Ice Pack badge.

The badge starts with a close up of a football helmet worn on some poor high school football player’s head. You see the area of the helmet where the mouth it and of course, the mouth guard of the football helmet frames the face. In the background, you see ice cubes filling up about half of the screen. As the animation starts, the mouth of our …hmm hmm…victim starts to open. It turns into a smile which widens further to show two missing front teeth on top with reddish gums showing. Obviously, this kid took a hit and lost the teeth unless that’s just the style these days. That kid’s going to need some ice. Coach…get em an ice pack! As his mouth opens wider, he sticks in tongue out in irreverent disregard for his two missing front teeth. Teenagers. The entire surface of the badge starts to freeze over and you see the beginning of the title “Ice Pack” start to crack this outer layer of ice which now covers the entire badge. The cracks for our emerging title get darker and bigger as they spread from the middle to meet in the corners. Ice Pack.

So are we just gluttons for punishment? Why would we put this badge up for high school sports? Because, injury and the need for ice packs is just part of the prep sport world. There’s no getting around it. To some extent, in games like Football, it’s actually old school in that minor injuries are badges themselves. It’s not unusual to see blood stains mixed in with grass on a player’s jersey at half time. It is football after all. You want clean jerseys, go check out ping pong. There’s also those crazy friends, and we all have them, that take great pride in their pain and injuries. I think the clinical term for this type of behavior is “Freakiness”. They love showing the scabs running down their arm or finger that doesn’t bend anymore. What can you say…it takes all types to make the world go around and the Prep Football badge Ice Pack offers a sick re-assurance to those among us who like to showcase their battle wounds.
